Elena Esposito
How Superficial Is The Surface?
Thursday, 11 June 2009, 8 pm

back

Using the example of fashion, Elena Esposito shows how the relation between surface and depth has changed in our society. Authenticity is found in the imitation of models that increasingly become deviant and empty – hence not in the affirmation of a certain content but in the structuring of external and self-observation. This dynamic is explained with reference to the role of the body, the specificity of the female and the form of graffiti.

Elena Esposito is professor for sociology of communication at Università degli Studi di Modena e Reggio Emilia. Her most significant publications in German language include:

- Die Fiktion der wahrscheinlichen Realität, Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp, 2008.
- Die Verbindlichkeit des Vorübergehenden: Paradoxien der Mode, Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp, 2004.
- Soziales Vergessen. Formen und Medien des Gedächtnisses der Gesellschaft, Frankfurt/M.: Suhrkamp, 2002.

Lecture will be held in German language.
