Annette Maechtel, Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 9-11 – Eine archäologische
Annäherung an Architektur, Videolecture
The building complex Karl-Liebknecht-Str. 9-11 was realised by the collective
Werner Radtke, Manfred Zumpe and Hans-Peter Schmiedel in 1968-72. The exhibition
spaces in the present-day Berlin Carré are part of this complex.
The lecture presents a collection of material and research which contextualises
the architecture as part of the urban planning of East Berlin’s city
centre. Among others it features advertising material from the 70s, which
follows a logic of distinction from the west. In film extracts from a recent
interview, architect Manfred Zumpe explains the building complex with regard
to its specific approach to urban space. As part of that he elaborates on
the former Haus Ungarn (Hungarian Culture Institute) which, as a culture space,
formed an essential part of the layout. The question is raised how these spaces
can be approached form a curatorial perspective, as they are present as a
material relic, yet their initial conception superimposed by new forms of
usage.
Annette Maechtel curated together with Christine Heidemann and Kathrin Peters the 2007 exhibition „die stadt von morgen“ (the city of tomorrow) – an archaeology of Berlin’s Hansa district, including a publication of the same name.
